Bangladesh fully prepared for fair, peaceful election in February: CA Yunus

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has assured Washington that Bangladesh is on track to hold a free, fair and peaceful general election in the first half of February, underscoring that the interim administration is taking broad measures to ensure transparency and credibility.
“The election will be held in February. It will be free, fair and peaceful. The country is fully prepared,” Yunus told US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor and the incoming US ambassador to India during a meeting on Sunday.
According to Muhammad Yunus’s deputy press secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Gor praised the Chief Adviser’s leadership and reiterated that the United States is ready to back Bangladesh’s democratic process.
Talks between the two sides ranged widely, touching not only on election preparations but also on regional security, trade, the Rohingya refugee crisis and disinformation campaigns targeting Dhaka.
CA Yunus pressed for sustained US assistance for the more than one million Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar and are still living in crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar. US officials promised that Washington’s humanitarian support would continue.
The Chief Adviser also used the opportunity to lay out his government’s broader diplomatic vision. He said Dhaka is stepping up efforts to revive the long-stalled South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which has not held a summit since 2014 due to tensions between India and Pakistan. In addition, Yunus voiced Bangladesh’s growing interest in joining ASEAN, arguing that closer integration with Southeast Asian economies could give fresh momentum to the country’s development.
He further highlighted the importance of strengthening economic partnerships with Nepal, Bhutan and India’s northeastern states—regions where stronger transport and trade links could reshape the connectivity map of South Asia.
