Malaysia agrees to recruit 'large number' of Bangladeshi workers

Malaysia has agreed in principle to hire a substantial number of workers from Bangladesh in the coming years, with commitments to safeguard their wages, rights, and overall well-being, according to officials from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment.

The agreement emerged from a bilateral meeting held in Putrajaya, Malaysia, where Asif Nazrul, an adviser to the Bangladeshi ministry, met with top representatives from Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources.
Officials familiar with the discussions said the talks centered on two main priorities: ensuring that existing Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia receive fair wages and benefits, and establishing a more transparent and ethical recruitment system for incoming workers.
“A comprehensive discussion took place regarding the recruitment of a large number of Bangladeshi workers, in line with demand from Malaysian employers, while upholding the rights and protections of the migrants,” a senior ministry official told the media.
As per the preliminary understanding, Malaysia is expected to recruit several hundred thousand Bangladeshi workers over the next few years. Notably, over 20,000 of these workers may be employed without having to bear any recruitment costs, officials added.
