ADB provides $150m loan for skills development in Bangladesh

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a $150 million loan agreement with the Government of Bangladesh to enhance the country’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system.
The agreement was signed today (3 August) at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in Dhaka. Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of ERD, and Hoe Yun Jeong, ADB Country Director for Bangladesh, represented their respective sides during the signing ceremony, according to an official press release.
“This program supports Bangladesh’s economic diversification by focusing on five key technology clusters—mechanical, electronics and electrical, information and communication technology (ICT), civil, and food and agriculture,” said Hoe Yun Jeong. “It aligns with the government's Integrated TVET Development Action Plan (ITDAP) and aims to create jobs, tackle social exclusion, and build a competitive workforce.”
The assistance is part of ADB’s “TVET Teachers for the Future” program, which follows a results-based approach. The program is designed to expand modern teacher training facilities across the country, especially in underserved regions outside Dhaka. It also aims to upgrade the teaching and technical skills of instructors in emerging technology fields.
One of the major goals of the program is to train at least 10,000 new and existing TVET teachers, who will go on to benefit more than 250,000 students. In addition, the initiative will help establish a national system for continuous professional development to maintain the quality and relevance of TVET education in Bangladesh over the long term.
