Nepal envoy urges stronger Nepal-Bangladesh partnership in trade, energy and education

Nepal’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanashyam Bhandari has called for deeper collaboration between the two neighbouring countries in areas including trade, energy, education, tourism, investment, and people-to-people connectivity, emphasizing that stronger cooperation could unlock vast untapped potential in South Asia.

Speaking at a lecture titled “Nepal-Bangladesh Relations: Pathways for Enhanced Economic and Educational Cooperation” at Daffodil International University (DIU) in Dhaka on Tuesday, Ambassador Bhandari underscored the importance of fostering closer bilateral and regional ties to accelerate growth and support both countries’ progress toward graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
According to a press release from the Embassy of Nepal, the envoy highlighted the “historic friendship and mutual respect” that have long defined relations between Nepal and Bangladesh since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972. He said both nations now stand at a “transformative juncture,” where cooperation in clean energy, digital innovation, and education could shape a more sustainable and inclusive regional future.
Bhandari stressed the need to enhance energy cooperation, particularly in hydropower trade and cross-border electricity transmission, noting that Nepal’s vast hydropower potential and Bangladesh’s growing energy demand make partnership in this sector mutually beneficial. He said joint investments in renewable energy and infrastructure could help ensure long-term energy security for both countries.
He also emphasized the importance of regional connectivity through frameworks such as SAARC, BIMSTEC, and the BBIN (Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal) initiative, which he described as “crucial platforms for promoting trade, transport, and people-to-people exchanges” across South Asia.
During the event, the ambassador interacted with students and faculty members, answering questions on Nepal’s development priorities, regional integration, and the future of South Asian cooperation.
Earlier in the day, Bhandari held a separate meeting with DIU Vice-Chancellor Professor S. M. Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder and senior university officials to explore opportunities for academic collaboration between Bangladeshi and Nepali universities. The discussions focused on launching faculty and student exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and digital education partnerships.
The envoy expressed confidence that enhanced educational and youth engagement would deepen mutual understanding and build the foundation for stronger economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
