Commonwealth chief vows continued support for Bangladesh

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey said she is listening to a wide range of stakeholders in Bangladesh and discussing how the Commonwealth can continue supporting its people at this important moment and in the years ahead.

Shirley Botchwey, now on her first official visit to Bangladesh from November 20–24, met Dhaka-based High Commissioners to discuss how the Commonwealth can deepen its cooperation with Bangladesh in the years ahead. Envoys from India, the UK, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives attended the meeting, where they reviewed ongoing initiatives and explored ways to reinforce collective support for governance, peace and stability in the country.
The Secretary-General also held a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, who briefed her on preparations for the February 2026 general election. Botchwey said the discussions centred on how the Commonwealth can help ensure the 'full participation of all Bangladeshis' in a credible and peaceful electoral process.
In separate engagements, Botchwey met leaders of major political parties and emphasised the importance of dialogue, non-violence and inclusivity during the election period. She said she appreciated hearing their perspectives on creating conditions for a fair and participatory vote, noting that these goals reflect the core values of the Commonwealth Charter.
During her meeting with Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, the Secretary-General welcomed his insights on judicial independence, rule of law and the judiciary’s contribution to inclusive governance. She assured him that the Commonwealth would continue supporting Bangladesh in strengthening judicial capacity, sharing international best practices and promoting legal reforms that benefit all citizens.
Botchwey began her visit by engaging with Bangladeshi youth representatives—a group she described as 'deeply passionate and committed to shaping a democracy that works for everyone.' She said the Commonwealth would stand with Bangladesh’s young people as they work toward building a more just, equitable and prosperous future.
Her ongoing visit also includes a scheduled meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to discuss expanding cooperation on governance, democratic resilience, economic progress and long-term national stability.
Ahead of her arrival, Botchwey called Bangladesh a 'valued member of the Commonwealth' and highlighted its long-standing ties with the organisation since independence. As the country prepares for next year’s national polls, she reaffirmed that the Commonwealth remains a reliable partner.
'Our shared commitment is to support a peaceful, inclusive and participatory environment where rights and freedoms are respected. The people of Bangladesh can continue to count on the Commonwealth,' she said.
