Bangladesh election: Tarique Rahman calls for unity after sweeping BNP victory

Tarique Rahman on Saturday urged political parties and citizens to unite to rebuild Bangladesh after his Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding two-thirds majority in the general election.

The BNP won 209 of the 300 parliamentary seats in Thursday’s, clearing the way for Rahman to become prime minister and form the next government. The Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance captured 77 seats and is set to serve as the main opposition.
In his first public address since the results were announced, Rahman said his administration would assume office at a 'critical moment' marked by economic strain, weakened institutions and a deteriorating law-and-order situation. Bangladesh has faced high inflation, pressure on foreign exchange reserves and slowing export growth over the past year.
'We are beginning our journey in difficult circumstances,' he said, blaming what he described as authoritarian governance for institutional damage. 'But if the people stand with us, no challenge will be insurmountable.'
Rahman pledged to prioritise economic recovery, job creation and institutional reforms, while ensuring accountability and rule of law. He also vowed zero tolerance for political violence or reprisals.
'Regardless of party, religion or opinion, injustice against the weak will not be allowed,' he said, calling the election outcome 'a victory for democracy and for the people of Bangladesh.'
On foreign policy, Rahman said Dhaka would pursue a balanced approach guided by national interests rather than alignment with any particular country, signalling continuity in maintaining ties with major regional and global partners.
Emphasising reconciliation, he said unity would be essential to restore stability and rebuild public trust in democratic institutions.
