Bangladesh calls for global unity to combat racial discrimination

Bangladesh has called for stronger international cooperation to confront racism and discrimination worldwide, with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman reaffirming the country’s continued commitment to equality and human rights.

Speaking at a session of the United Nations General Assembly marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Khalilur Rahman urged the global community to intensify efforts to combat racism in all its forms. He stressed that despite longstanding international frameworks, meaningful progress remains limited and uneven across regions.
The minister highlighted ongoing humanitarian and racial challenges in Rakhine State and the Gaza Strip, where vulnerable populations continue to face discrimination, displacement and violence. He said such situations underscore the failure to fully implement the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, adopted to address global racial injustices.
Khalilur Rahman also raised concerns about the treatment of migrant workers, pointing out that many endure exploitation, social exclusion and restricted access to justice in host countries. These challenges, he said, contradict the core values and principles upheld by the United Nations.
Reiterating Bangladesh’s constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination, he outlined ongoing domestic efforts to strengthen human rights institutions, promote social inclusion and maintain communal harmony. He emphasized the need for increased investment in education, stronger action against hate speech—particularly online—and expanded intercultural dialogue to foster mutual understanding. He added that sustained global solidarity and political will are essential to building a fairer and more inclusive world.
