Nepal issues arrest warrant for former PM Deuba
Nepalese authorities have issued an arrest warrant for former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba over alleged corruption and money laundering, marking a major development in the country’s ongoing anti-graft campaign.
Officials confirmed that a similar warrant has also been issued for his wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, a former foreign minister. Both are currently abroad for medical treatment, according to Deuba, who has strongly denied the allegations and described them as politically motivated.
Deuba, a veteran leader of the Nepali Congress and a five-time prime minister, said claims about his family’s wealth are “false propaganda” and insisted his public life has been transparent. Local media reports suggest authorities may seek international assistance, including an Interpol notice, if the couple does not return voluntarily.
The warrants come amid a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown launched by the government of Balendra Shah, who came to power on a reformist platform following mass protests last year. The unrest, driven by public anger over corruption and economic hardship, led to the previous administration and significant political upheaval.
Several senior figures have already been detained, including former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and ex-home minister Ramesh Lekhak, over their alleged roles in a violent crackdown on demonstrators.
Investigators are also examining reports of large sums of cash discovered at properties linked to Deuba, though he has dismissed circulating footage as fabricated. Authorities say further inquiries are ongoing as Nepal intensifies efforts to restore public trust and accountability in governance.
