Bangladesh is a global champion for green factories

Under the scorching midday sun, SM Sourcing, nestled in Gazipur's Konabari, stands as a beacon of environmentally conscious manufacturing. This renowned garment factory, hailed as the world's top-rated green facility, bustles with activity as workers diligently craft high-quality apparel destined for global markets. Despite the sweltering summer heat, the factory floor remains remarkably cool, with minimal reliance on electric fans.

With a stellar score of 106 out of 110 in the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, SM Sourcing epitomizes sustainable practices in the industry. Despite its modest size, employing just 900 workers, the factory has implemented innovative green technologies to create a comfortable working environment.
Strategic design elements, such as ample open space and verdant tree cover, promote natural ventilation and reduce indoor temperatures. Elevated ceilings prevent excessive heat buildup, while a network of exhaust fans ensures efficient air circulation. Rainwater harvesting further minimizes dependence on groundwater, enhancing water sustainability.
Embracing renewable energy, SM Sourcing harnesses solar power, generating 45 kilowatts of electricity daily through solar panels. This eco-friendly approach significantly reduces reliance on fossil fuel-generated power, exemplifying the factory's commitment to environmental stewardship.
While the upfront investment in achieving platinum-level LEED certification entails a substantial cost increase compared to conventional factories, an increasing number of Bangladeshi entrepreneurs recognize the long-term benefits of green manufacturing. Bangladesh has emerged as a global leader in eco-friendly practices, boasting 213 LEED-certified factories, including an impressive tally of 80 platinum and 119 gold-rated facilities.
The country's remarkable achievement underscores the garment sector's unwavering dedication to sustainability and sets a precedent for responsible manufacturing practices worldwide. Bangladesh's dominance in green factory initiatives not only enhances its global reputation but also attracts investment and fosters partnerships aimed at advancing sustainable development goals.
As Bangladesh continues to prioritize environmental conservation and innovation, its success in green manufacturing serves as a testament to the transformative power of sustainable practices in shaping a brighter, more resilient future for generations to come.
