OIC urges UN Security Council to take urgent action on Gaza crisis

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), currently chaired by Türkiye, has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to act swiftly to end the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking during an open debate on the Middle East, Türkiye’s UN Permanent Representative Ahmet Yıldız warned that the situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with civilians enduring what he described as “unbearable and life-threatening conditions.”
“It is deeply regrettable that despite recent negotiations and proximity talks aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire, no immediate results have been achieved,” Yıldız said. “This has left the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza, to face the continuing horrors of this illegal occupation, where more innocent lives are lost every single day.”
Representing the 57-member OIC, Yıldız condemned what he described as “genocide, forced displacement, starvation, and destruction perpetrated by Israeli forces,” actions which he said amount to “war crimes and crimes against humanity.” He stressed that the alleged campaign to forcibly displace Gaza’s population is a deliberate violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and basic human rights.
The OIC called on the Security Council to fulfill its core mandate of maintaining international peace and security and to act decisively at what it termed “a crucial moment in the history of the protracted Middle East crisis.”
The statement also addressed the situation in Syria, with the OIC strongly condemning “continued Israeli aggression against the sovereignty and territory of the Syrian Arab Republic.” The organization reaffirmed Syria’s right to self-defense under the UN Charter.
