Malaysia backs Bangladesh's bid for ASEAN membership

Malaysia has expressed strong support for Bangladesh’s aspiration to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), highlighting the country's growing economic strength and regional significance.

During a meeting in Kuala Lumpur with a visiting delegation from Bangladesh’s National Defence College (NDC), Malaysian Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Liew Chin Tong said that ASEAN should give serious consideration to Bangladesh’s membership bid.
“I think it’s an excellent idea for ASEAN to take Bangladesh’s potential membership seriously,” said Liew. The delegation was led by Major General Md Moshfequr Rahman.
Liew emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral economic ties and noted that Bangladesh plays a key role in Malaysia’s economic landscape—not only due to the large number of Bangladeshi workers in the country but also because of Bangladesh’s substantial market size as the world’s eighth most populous country.
The deputy minister also shared plans to visit Bangladesh at the end of June, signaling a further step toward enhancing cooperation between the two nations.
