At least 23 people dead after fire at nightclub in India's Goa

A deadly fire tore through a nightclub in India's Goa early Sunday, killing at least 23 people and injuring several others, officials confirmed.

The blaze erupted shortly after midnight in Arpora, a village in the state’s popular coastal belt. prompting a major emergency response as videos circulating online showed ambulances lining the streets and firefighters battling intense flames.
According to Goa’s police chief, the fire broke out around 12:04 a.m. local time (1834 GMT Saturday). Emergency teams rushed to the scene within minutes, deploying fire engines, rescue units and medical staff. Authorities said the injured were transported to multiple hospitals across North Goa as crews worked through the night to extinguish the blaze and search the premises.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced an official inquiry into the incident, saying on X that the state would determine responsibility and ensure such tragedies are prevented. Police later confirmed that the fire had been fully contained and that all bodies had been recovered from the site.
Initial reports suggest the club was hosting a weekend event and was crowded at the time of the fire, raising concerns about possible safety violations—an issue frequently highlighted in Goa’s nightlife industry. Investigators are examining whether electrical faults, negligence or illegal structural modifications contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Goa, one of India’s most visited tourist destinations, attracts millions every year with its beaches, nightlife, and scenic hills.
India's Government data shows that more than 5.5 million tourists visited the state in the first half of this year, including 271,000 foreign visitors. The tragedy has raised fresh questions about fire safety compliance in entertainment venues amid a busy tourism season.
