Iran and India discuss ties as Iranian FM condemns US interference
Iran and India have held high-level diplomatic talks as tensions continue to simmer across the Middle East, with Tehran strongly criticising what it described as ongoing US interference in regional affairs.
According to Iran’s foreign ministry, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke by phone with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, focusing on bilateral cooperation as well as wider regional and international developments. Araghchi accused Washington of adopting a “provocative” posture toward Iran, saying US policies amounted to interference in Iran’s internal affairs and were fuelling instability beyond its borders.
He reiterated that Tehran would not bow to external pressure and stressed Iran’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and national interests. The Iranian minister also underlined the strategic importance Iran places on its ties with India, citing deep historical and cultural connections. He said Tehran was keen to expand cooperation in trade, energy, transit routes and regional connectivity, including projects linking South and Central Asia.
Jaishankar, in turn, reaffirmed New Delhi’s interest in strengthening relations with Iran through sustained dialogue and engagement. He emphasised India’s support for diplomatic solutions to manage disagreements and reduce tensions. The Indian minister warned that escalating conflict in the region could threaten global energy supplies, trade corridors and economic stability, areas of direct concern to India and the wider international community.
