India to recall diplomats' families from Bangladesh

India has decided to recall family members and dependents of its diplomats and officials stationed in Bangladesh, citing security concerns ahead of the country’s February 12 national elections, Indian media reported, quoting official sources.

Officials said the move was a precautionary step taken in view of the prevailing security situation. Dependents of personnel posted at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and other diplomatic missions across Bangladesh have been advised to return to India, while diplomatic operations will continue uninterrupted.
Indian authorities stressed that the High Commission in Dhaka and all other posts in Bangladesh would continue to function at full operational strength, with diplomats and essential staff remaining in place to carry out consular and diplomatic duties.
The decision comes amid strained political relations between the two neighbours following the mass uprising in 2024 that led to the ouster of then prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a long-time ally of New Delhi.
According to Indian media reports, Indian missions have faced increased security threats in recent months. Tensions escalated further after the December 12 shooting of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, with unverified reports suggesting the attackers may have fled to India.
On December 17, a student group, July Oikya Mancho, announced a march towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, prompting India to summon Bangladesh’s high commissioner. The demonstration was later blocked at a distance from the mission.
India has reiterated to Bangladesh’s interim government that the protection of foreign diplomatic missions and personnel remains the host country’s responsibility under international law.
