UK seeks closer ties with Bangladesh's new government
The United Kingdom has expressed its intention to deepen cooperation with Bangladesh’s newly formed government, reaffirming what it described as a long-standing and evolving bilateral partnership.
British High Commissioner to Dhaka Sarah Cook conveyed the message during a courtesy meeting on Tuesday with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and State Minister Shama Obaed. The discussions focused on expanding collaboration across multiple strategic areas.
Speaking after the meeting, Cook underscored the breadth of ties between the two countries, noting that both sides are keen to advance shared priorities in trade, economic development, migration management, regional security and climate resilience.
The United Kingdom remains one of Bangladesh’s largest export destinations, particularly for ready-made garments, and is a major source of development assistance and investment. Officials said enhancing trade diversification and improving the investment climate were key topics of discussion.
Climate change — a critical issue for Bangladesh as one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations — also featured prominently. The UK pledged continued support for adaptation, green financing and renewable energy initiatives.
Migration cooperation and efforts to address irregular migration were also raised, alongside discussions on the Rohingya crisis. The UK has been a significant humanitarian donor supporting displaced Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.
Cook congratulated the foreign minister on assuming office and described the moment as an opportunity to strengthen political dialogue and people-to-people ties, including the role of the large Bangladeshi diaspora in Britain.
