47 countries voice full support for Bangladesh govt at ILO session
Bangladesh’s newly formed government has received strong international backing from 47 countries during the 356th session of the International Labour Organization Governing Body in Geneva.
Participating nations congratulated the administration led by PM Tarique Rahman and expressed willingness to cooperate on advancing workers’ rights and institutional reforms.
The session reviewed a long-standing complaint filed in 2019 under Article 26 of the ILO Constitution by worker representatives linked to the International Trade Union Confederation. The complaint alleged non-compliance with key labour conventions related to labour inspection, freedom of association and collective bargaining.
Bangladesh presented its ninth progress report on a reform roadmap first submitted in 2021, outlining legislative and administrative steps taken to align with international labour standards. Representatives from multiple regions, along with employer groups, commended the government’s renewed commitment to reform and called for a swift resolution of the case.
The Bangladeshi delegation included Labour and Employment officials, senior advisers and diplomats, who highlighted ongoing initiatives such as planned amendments to labour laws, improved inspection mechanisms and enhanced worker protections. Officials noted that a parliamentary committee has been formed to expedite the Bangladesh Labour Law Amendment Ordinance 2025.
Government representatives also emphasized alignment with the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda, focusing on job creation, social justice, skills development and inclusive economic growth. They reiterated commitments to democratic governance and safeguarding workers’ rights.
Following detailed discussions, the Governing Body agreed to review progress again in March next year, with continued international engagement expected to support Bangladesh’s reform efforts.
