Arif M Khan may be appointed next Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh
Senior Indian politician Arif Mohammed Khan is being considered for appointment as India’s next high commissioner to Bangladesh, according to media reports. If confirmed, the move would mark a notable shift in New Delhi’s diplomatic approach toward Dhaka.
Khan, a prominent figure in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), most recently served as governor of Bihar from 2025 to 2026. Prior to that, he held the position of governor of Kerala between 2019 and 2025 and has also served as a union minister, handling key portfolios including civil aviation, energy and parliamentary affairs.
He is expected to replace incumbent envoy Pranay Kumar Verma, who has been serving as India’s high commissioner to Bangladesh during a period of evolving bilateral ties. The potential appointment has drawn attention as it would be one of the rare instances in recent years where a senior political figure, rather than a career diplomat from the Indian Foreign Service, is nominated to the post.
According to reports from IndianMandarins, a platform focused on governance and civil services, the move could signal New Delhi’s intention to bring a more political and strategic dimension to its engagement with Bangladesh. Analysts suggest that appointing a seasoned politician may help navigate complex regional dynamics, including trade, connectivity, water-sharing and security cooperation.
India and Bangladesh share close historical, economic and cultural ties, with cooperation spanning energy, infrastructure and cross-border connectivity projects. Observers say the choice of envoy comes at a time when both countries are seeking to strengthen engagement amid shifting political and economic conditions in South Asia.
