Stranded Bangladeshi vessel begins journey toward Strait of Hormuz following ceasefire

A Bangladesh-flagged cargo vessel stranded for nearly a month in the Persian Gulf has resumed its journey following a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, easing security concerns in the region.

The ship, MV Banglar Joyjatra, departed from Saudi Arabia early on Tuesday and is now heading toward the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
Owned by the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, the vessel had been stuck for 28 days with 31 Bangladeshi crew members on board after escalating hostilities disrupted maritime movement. The ship had earlier unloaded cargo at Jebel Ali Port before being forced to delay further operations due to safety risks linked to the conflict.
Officials said the vessel set sail from Ras Al Khair Port carrying around 37,000 tonnes of fertiliser. According to managing director Mahmudul Malek, the ship will take approximately 40 hours to reach the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz, where it will await clearance before proceeding further.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, maintaining communication with regional counterparts, including Iran, to ensure a safe passage. The decision to delay the vessel’s earlier movement had been taken as a precaution after military strikes and retaliatory attacks heightened risks across the Gulf.
Data from maritime tracking services shows the vessel is currently moving at a steady speed through the Persian Gulf. The ship had originally entered the region in early February, transporting goods from India and Qatar before reaching the UAE.
The recent ceasefire announcement by Donald Trump has provided a temporary window for safer navigation. Officials say further movement through the strait will depend on security assessments and coordinated instructions to avoid potential threats.
