FM Ishaq Dar appointed as Pakistan's deputy prime minister

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was given the additional charge of deputy premier on Sunday, according to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division.

This decision was made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a time when both he and Dar, alongside other ministers, are in Saudi Arabia for the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) special meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy.
The notification specified that Dar's appointment is effective immediately and will remain so until further notice. This move marks a significant development as the country has not had a deputy prime minister since Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, representing the PML-Q, who held the position back in June 2012.
Dar previously served as the federal minister for commerce and investment during Nawaz Sharif's government from 1997 to 1999. Additionally, Dar has twice held the position of federal minister for finance, economic affairs, revenue, and statistics, once in 1998-1999 and again in 2008.
Before his ministerial roles, Dar was appointed as the minister of state/chief executive of the Pakistan Investment Board (PIB) from 1992 to 1993. His contributions extend beyond government roles, as he has also served as the president of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In 2008, Dar briefly served as the federal finance minister before resigning from the position when the PML-N decided to withdraw from the PPP-led coalition government. Subsequently, he resumed his role as finance minister under Prime Minister Nawaz’s government in 2013.
Dar's most recent stint as finance minister began in September 2022 and lasted until the conclusion of the coalition government’s tenure in August 2023.
