Pakistan tells UN India politicizing river flows by halting Indus treaty

Pakistan has raised serious concerns at the United Nations over India’s unilateral decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), calling it a violation of international norms and a threat to the livelihoods of over 240 million people.

Addressing a UN session focused on safeguarding water resources during armed conflict, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Usman Jadoon urged the global community to take immediate action to prevent a looming humanitarian crisis and potential regional instability.
"This action constitutes a serious breach of international legal frameworks, including human rights, treaty law, and established international norms," Ambassador Jadoon stated during the Arria Formula meeting convened by Slovenia.
He firmly rejected India’s move to place the treaty in abeyance, urging New Delhi to uphold its international commitments and avoid disrupting the flow of rivers that are vital to Pakistan’s population. “We categorically reject any such unlawful actions and call on India to cease interfering with the natural flow of these rivers,” he said.
Ambassador Jadoon also highlighted concerning rhetoric from Indian officials, referencing provocative statements that, he argued, reflect a dangerous mindset. “Talk of ‘starving the people of Pakistan’ is deeply troubling and signals a disturbing shift in thinking,” he noted.
Pakistan called on the international community to oppose the use of water as a political weapon and asked the UN Security Council to stay vigilant and respond proactively to any escalation that could affect regional peace and security.
