Pakistan government to move Imran Khan to hospital for eye treatment
Pakistan’s government has decided to transfer jailed former prime minister Imran Khan to hospital for urgent eye treatment.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said authorities would constitute a medical board to oversee Khan’s condition and ensure he receives treatment in line with prison regulations. He added that the former premier had been allowed to speak to his sons and stressed that providing medical facilities to inmates was the government’s legal obligation. Chaudhry urged political actors not to exploit health issues for political purposes.
Khan’s legal team has petitioned the Islamabad High Court seeking his release on medical grounds, arguing that his deteriorating eyesight requires specialised and immediate care. The move comes amid a second consecutive day of protests by opposition supporters demanding improved treatment and transparency regarding his health.
Earlier this month, a lawyer appointed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan reported that the 73-year-old had suffered significant vision loss in his right eye due to central retinal vein occlusion, leaving him with only about 15 percent sight in that eye. Medical experts say the condition can lead to permanent damage if not promptly managed.
Opposition parties, including Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, have staged a sit-in outside Parliament House, calling for his immediate transfer to Al-Shifa Hospital in Islamabad for treatment under his personal physicians.
Khan, who was convicted in a corruption case in December 2025, is also challenging that verdict. His lawyers have filed a petition seeking suspension of the sentence during the appeal process, arguing that continued imprisonment while his health worsens would amount to injustice.
