Trump pressures Canada to join US golden dome or become 51st state

US President Donald Trump has stated that Canada must pay $61 billion to participate in his proposed 'Golden Dome' missile defense initiative—unless it agrees to become America’s 51st state.
In a post on his social media platform TruthSocial, Trump claimed that Canada is eager to join the missile shield, which he described as “fabulous.” However, he added that Canada would only receive free access if it agreed to integrate more formally with the US.
“It would cost them nothing if they become our beloved 51st State,” Trump wrote, suggesting Canadian officials are weighing the option.
The remarks came just hours after King Charles III addressed Canada’s Parliament in a rare royal appearance, underscoring the country’s sovereignty amid global instability. The speech appeared to contrast sharply with Trump’s message pushing for closer—or even formal—unification with the US.
In response to the international security climate, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told CBC that Canada hopes to join the European defense initiative ReArm Europe by July 1, aiming to lessen the country’s reliance on American military support.
