US lost sovereignty in New York with Mamdani's victory: Trump

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that the United States had “lost its sovereignty” following Zohran Mamdani’s historic election as New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, calling the result a victory for “communism” in America’s largest city.

Speaking at a rally in Miami, a day after Mamdani’s sweeping win, Trump said, “We’ll take care of it,” without elaborating on what steps he planned to take. He warned that New York City would soon “turn communist” under Mamdani’s leadership, adding that Miami “will become the refuge for those fleeing communism in New York.”
“The decision facing every American could not be clearer — it’s a choice between communism and common sense, between economic nightmare and economic miracle,” Trump said, as he marked the first anniversary of his own election victory over Democrat Kamala Harris.
“We rescued our economy, restored liberty, and together we saved America on that magnificent night 365 days ago,” he told cheering supporters.
Mamdani’s victory, achieved despite a sustained campaign targeting his socialist platform and Muslim identity, marks a major political milestone for progressives. The 34-year-old Democrat, a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights and economic equality, defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in Tuesday’s election.
“If any city can show the nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to overcome him, it’s the city that created him,” Mamdani declared during his victory speech late Tuesday.
Political analysts say Mamdani’s win — alongside Democratic victories in Virginia and New Jersey governor races — signals a broader shift in voter sentiment ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress.
In another significant development, voters in California passed a ballot measure to redraw electoral districts, countering gerrymandering efforts linked to Trump-aligned state legislatures.
Trump, however, dismissed suggestions that the Republican losses reflected voter dissatisfaction with his leadership. In a post on Truth Social, he blamed the defeats on “the government shutdown” and the fact that “my name wasn’t on the ballot,” citing unnamed pollsters.
Despite the fiery rhetoric, Trump’s remarks underscore growing tensions between his administration and rising progressive movements, as the country prepares for another deeply polarized election cycle.
