Trump warns Canada over possible China trade deal

US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington would take strong retaliatory action if Canada moves ahead with a trade agreement with China.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump said the United States would respond 'in a very substantial way' if Ottawa finalises a deal with Beijing. He argued that closer trade ties with China could undermine Canada’s economic independence and harm US interests. 'We don’t want China to take over Canada,' Trump said, adding that such an agreement would carry serious consequences.
The warning follows Trump’s remarks last week threatening to impose a 100 percent tariff on Canadian goods should the deal go ahead. The proposed levy would mark one of the harshest trade measures ever taken by the US against its closest trading partner.
Canadian officials have sought to downplay the dispute, saying discussions with China are focused on resolving specific tariff and market access issues rather than negotiating a full free trade agreement. Analysts say Trump’s comments reflect broader US concerns about China’s growing economic influence and come amid strained US-Canada relations over trade, defence spending and foreign policy alignment.
