Antonio Guterres alarmed by reports of Myanmar airstrikes

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is alarmed by reports that military airstrikes in Myanmar, including on Monday in Minbya township, have killed and injured many civilians, a UN spokesperson said.

Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been in a state of unrest and turmoil, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence and instability.
'The escalation of conflict in Rakhine State is contributing to widespread displacement and worsening existing vulnerabilities and discrimination,' the spokesperson stated. 'The Secretary-General urges all parties involved to refrain from escalating communal tensions.'
According to accounts from local residents, Radio Free Asia reported a devastating incident on Friday where 23 individuals lost their lives and 30 others sustained injuries when a fighter jet bombed Thar Dar, a predominantly Rohingya village located approximately 5 km (three miles) north of Minbya.
The Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar has long faced persecution in the predominantly Buddhist country. Nearly a million Rohingya refugees currently reside in overcrowded camps in Cox's Bazar, a border district in Bangladesh, after fleeing a brutal military crackdown in 2017.
