Hundreds missing after Rohingya refugee boat capsizes in Andaman Sea: UN

Around 250 Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals are feared missing after an overcrowded boat capsized in the Andaman Sea, according to a joint statement by the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.

The vessel, carrying men, women and children, reportedly sank amid rough seas and strong winds.
The trawler is believed to have departed from Teknaf in southern Bangladesh, a key transit point for displaced Rohingya, and was heading toward Malaysia, a common destination for those seeking safety and economic opportunities. Authorities and humanitarian agencies have expressed concern that the actual number of casualties could rise, as rescue operations remain limited and many passengers were not registered.
The UN agencies described the incident as a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by the Rohingya community, who continue to flee persecution, conflict and dire living conditions. Since the 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar, more than 730,000 Rohingya have taken refuge in Bangladesh, where many live in overcrowded camps with limited access to jobs, education and basic services.
Despite the risks, thousands attempt dangerous sea crossings each year, often relying on human traffickers and unsafe vessels. Aid groups say worsening regional instability and lack of long-term solutions are pushing more people to undertake such journeys.
Humanitarian organisations have renewed calls for stronger regional cooperation to prevent loss of life at sea, including improved search and rescue efforts, legal migration pathways and greater protection for refugees. They also stress the urgent need for sustainable solutions, including safe repatriation to Myanmar and expanded resettlement opportunities.
