Iran's Khamenei slams US nuclear proposal, vows to keep enriching uranium

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has firmly dismissed a US proposal demanding restrictions on uranium enrichment, vowing that Tehran will continue its nuclear activities despite international pressure.

Speaking on Wednesday during a ceremony commemorating the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini—the founder of the Islamic Republic—Khamenei criticized the American plan as incompatible with Iran's principles of self-reliance and sovereignty.
“The proposal from the United States is contrary to our nation's belief in independence and our motto of ‘We Can,’” Khamenei declared. He emphasized that uranium enrichment is central to Iran’s goal of achieving energy autonomy.
Khamenei argued that true independence means making national decisions without awaiting approval from foreign powers, especially the US He added that the American proposal is in direct opposition to the revolutionary values established in 1979.
“Some believe being rational means giving in to American pressure, but that’s a misunderstanding of rationality,” he said.
His remarks come as indirect talks between Tehran and Washington continue over the possibility of reviving a nuclear agreement. The two sides remain divided, particularly over the scale and scope of Iran's uranium enrichment, which the US reportedly wants halted or significantly reduced in return for easing sanctions.
Earlier this week, Reuters reported that Iran is likely to reject the most recent US offer aimed at resolving the long-standing nuclear standoff.
Iran maintains that its nuclear program is intended solely for peaceful purposes and has consistently denied allegations from Western governments that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons.
