Iran FM Araghchi says nuclear deal 'within reach' ahead of US talks

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a renewed nuclear agreement with the United States is “within reach” ahead of another round of negotiations scheduled later this week, expressing cautious optimism that diplomacy could ease long-standing tensions.

In a message posted on the social media platform X, Araghchi described the upcoming discussions as a “historic opportunity” to reach a comprehensive understanding that addresses the concerns of both sides. He stressed that progress would depend on prioritising diplomatic engagement and mutual trust.
Iran and the United States are expected to meet in Geneva on Thursday for a third round of nuclear negotiations since dialogue resumed earlier this month. The talks come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, including an increased US military presence and warnings from Donald Trump that military action could be considered if negotiations fail.
Tehran has warned that any attack on its territory or nuclear facilities would be treated as aggression and would trigger a firm response. Iranian officials say the country remains committed to defending its sovereignty and security interests.
Araghchi reiterated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons but insists on its right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology, including uranium enrichment for energy production, medicine and scientific research.
Negotiations follow a breakdown in last year’s diplomatic efforts, which collapsed after a major regional escalation involving Israel and the United States. At the time, US forces carried out strikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities, while Iran responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israeli positions and a major US military base in Qatar.
Diplomats say a successful agreement could reduce regional tensions and revive international monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities.
