Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza: Matthew Miller

Matthew Miller, a former spokesperson for the US State Department during President Joe Biden's administration, has stated that Israel has indeed committed war crimes in Gaza.

In remarks reported by Arab News, Miller clarified that he does not believe the situation constitutes genocide. However, he emphasized, "It is undeniably true that war crimes have been committed by Israel," noting that those responsible within the Israeli military have not been held accountable.
Speaking on the "Trump 100" podcast, Miller discussed how war crimes can be evaluated. He explained that one perspective involves examining whether a government is deliberately pursuing a policy that includes war crimes or is recklessly enabling them.
"Whether the state itself is actively committing war crimes remains an open question," he said. "But what is far less uncertain is that individual members of the Israeli military have carried out actions that qualify as war crimes."
Miller also shed light on internal divisions within the White House over U.S. policy on the conflict, dating back to the early stages of the war. These disagreements varied in intensity, ranging from minor to more serious disputes.
He noted that the Biden administration had debated whether and when to limit arms sales to Israel. This internal debate led to a significant decision in spring 2024 to halt the delivery of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, amid concerns about their potential use in Gaza.
Miller acknowledged that President Biden’s unwavering military support for Israel became a contentious issue within his administration. While that support continued, public criticism of U.S. policy also raised concerns that it might have emboldened Hamas.
As the 2024 US presidential election approached, Biden’s approval ratings declined, with the conflict in Gaza emerging as a key factor affecting public opinion.
