Trump says he will visit China in april after call with Xi Jinping

US President Donald Trump said he held a 'very good' phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, confirming that he will travel to Beijing in April for a high-profile visit aimed at reinforcing stability in bilateral ties.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said both leaders discussed a wide range of global and economic issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war, fentanyl trafficking, and agricultural trade. He claimed the two sides had reached what he described as an 'important deal' benefiting American farmers, particularly those in the soybean and broader agricultural sectors.
Trump said the call followed their 'highly successful' meeting in South Korea last month. stressing that both Washington and Beijing were making 'significant progress' in implementing and updating recent agreements. He added that Xi would later make a state visit to the United States as part of reciprocal diplomacy designed to maintain stability between the world’s two largest economies.
Chinese state media offered additional details, emphasizing that Xi used the call to underline Beijing’s stance on Taiwan. According to Xinhua, Xi told Trump that Taiwan’s return to China remained a core element of the post-World War II international order and called on Washington to jointly protect the outcomes of the war’s settlement framework.
Tensions over Taiwan have intensified in recent months. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned earlier this month that any Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute a 'survival-threatening situation' for Japan, potentially triggering its right to collective self-defense. Her comments sparked a strong backlash from Beijing, which responded by issuing travel warnings for Japan and re-imposing a ban on certain Japanese seafood imports.
Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in US-China relations, with Beijing insisting the island is part of its sovereign territory. Taipei, governed independently since 1949, rejects Beijing’s claims. Under the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances, the United States remains committed to supporting Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities.
During the call, Xi and Trump also reviewed developments in the Russia-Ukraine war. Xi reiterated China’s support for diplomatic efforts that could ease tensions, saying he hoped all parties would work toward reducing differences and advancing negotiations. The conversation came a day after US, Ukrainian, and European officials met in Geneva to examine Washington’s latest proposal aimed at ending the more than three-and-a-half-year conflict.
