Myanmar pledges to build strong ties with Bangladesh

Myanmar Foreign Minister Than Swe has congratulated Bangladesh’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, expressing hope for closer cooperation and stronger diplomatic relations between Naypyidaw and Dhaka.

In his message, Than Swe reaffirmed Myanmar’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and expanding cooperation on issues of mutual interest, particularly regional stability and border management. Officials say the exchange signals a renewed effort to improve relations at a time when both countries are seeking progress on unresolved humanitarian concerns.
In a rare diplomatic gesture, Twan Mrat Naing, chairman of the United League of Arakan and leader of the Arakan Army, also sent a congratulatory message to Rahman. He expressed willingness to work with Bangladesh on “practical and sustainable solutions” and called for a new chapter of friendship between Bangladesh and the Arakan region.
Officials view the messages from both Myanmar authorities and the Arakan leadership as a sign of readiness to engage the new Bangladeshi government in dialogue on the Rohingya crisis.
Bangladesh has recently maintained contacts with both the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army in efforts to facilitate the safe and voluntary return of displaced Rohingya people to Rakhine State.
Dhaka is also coordinating with the United Nations and international partners to seek a durable solution to the protracted crisis. Rohingya representatives have repeatedly voiced their desire to return to their ancestral homes with guarantees of security, citizenship rights and livelihood opportunities.
Diplomats say continued engagement among all parties will be crucial for making progress toward a sustainable and peaceful resolution.
