Trump signals possible end to Iran war, considers waiving oil sanctions

US President Donald Trump signalled that the ongoing conflict with Iran could end soon, saying Washington is considering easing oil-related sanctions and taking measures to secure energy shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In remarks reported by Bloomberg and during an interview with CBS News, Trump said the US military campaign was progressing faster than expected and suggested that the conflict might soon reach a resolution.
“We are ahead of schedule,” he said, adding that the United States is pursuing what he described as an “ultimate victory.” However, the president also acknowledged that the US had “not won enough yet,” indicating that military operations could continue until Washington’s objectives are fully achieved.
Trump said his administration is weighing the possibility of waiving certain oil sanctions on Iran, a move that could ease pressure on global energy markets and allow limited oil flows from the country.
He also suggested that the US Navy could escort oil tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, carrying roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies.
Meanwhile, Israel said it had launched a second round of airstrikes targeting sites in the Iranian capital Tehran as hostilities intensified.
Several countries in the region reported intercepting Iranian missiles during the latest escalation, including Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar.
The conflict has also raised concerns about global economic stability. Rachel Reeves warned that the escalating Middle East crisis could push inflation higher worldwide.
Oil markets reacted quickly, with global benchmark crude prices climbing above $100 a barrel for the first time since 2022.
Separately, John Healey said a drone strike on a British military base in Cyprus last week likely originated from either Lebanon or Iraq, underscoring the widening regional security risks linked to the conflict.
