Brazil will seriously consider Bangladesh's inclusion in BRICS bloc

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has expressed Brazil's strong consideration for Bangladesh's inclusion in the BRICS bloc of developing nations.

Following a meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Hasan Mahmud in Dhaka on Sunday, Vieira stated, "We will examine the candidature of countries and Bangladesh is a country very close to us. We would share principles, share positions. We will consider it from our side very strongly and very positively."
While Bangladesh had expressed interest in joining BRICS, it was not extended an invitation during the alliance's summit in South Africa the previous year. The current members of BRICS include China, Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa. Additionally, the bloc expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, and the United Arab Emirates.
Vieira also discussed with Mahmud potential avenues for cooperation to enhance balanced trade between the two nations. He highlighted concerns regarding Brazil's tax system in relation to some exports from Bangladesh and explored ways to address and improve this aspect of their bilateral relations.
Pointing out that Brazil-Bangladesh trade reached $2.3 billion in 2023, Vieira emphasized the significant economic ties between the two countries. Brazil stands as Bangladesh's leading trading partner in Latin America, while Bangladesh holds the position of the second-largest trading partner for Brazil in South Asia.
