UK envoy visits Dhaka to boost trade partnership

The United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Bangladesh, Baroness Winterton, is visiting Dhaka this week to strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations, signaling London’s continued commitment to expanding cooperation with Bangladesh under its new government.

The visit, her third to the country, comes shortly after the formation of the administration led by PM Tarique Rahman, and highlights growing engagement across sectors such as trade, investment, higher education, aviation and defence. During her stay, she is scheduled to hold meetings with senior government officials, policymakers and military representatives to discuss priorities for sustainable economic growth.
Baroness Winterton is also engaging with business leaders and representatives of British companies operating in Bangladesh, aiming to identify new opportunities for investment and deepen commercial ties. Discussions are expected to focus on improving market access, encouraging innovation and strengthening supply chains between the two countries.
A key part of her visit includes meetings with Bangladeshi exporters benefiting from the Developing Countries Trading Scheme, which provides duty-free access to the UK market. The scheme has played a significant role in supporting Bangladesh’s export sector, particularly garments, while also encouraging diversification into higher-value products.
The UK remains one of Bangladesh’s largest export destinations, with billions of dollars in annual trade and strong links in development cooperation. British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said the visit reflects a shared commitment to growth and prosperity as Bangladesh advances toward a more resilient and diversified economy.
