Three Bangladesh missions abroad near completion

Bangladesh is on the verge of completing three out of eight major projects aimed at building permanent diplomatic missions abroad, marking a significant step in the government’s plan to strengthen its global presence.
These projects, involving an investment of more than Tk1,000 crore, are part of a long-term strategy to shift from rented facilities to purpose-built, state-owned complexes that reduce operational costs and enhance diplomatic visibility, officials confirmed.
Among the fast-progressing projects is the new mission complex in Islamabad, Pakistan, which has almost reached completion as of June 30, 2025. Built on 16 bighas of land in Islamabad’s high-end diplomatic zone — one of the largest land allocations Bangladesh has ever received abroad — the complex includes a chancery building, diplomatic dormitories, and a Bangladesh House. Officials noted that the scale of engagement between Dhaka and Islamabad has seen steady growth since the political transition following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
Two other key projects — a chancery complex and high commissioner’s residence in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, and the Bangladesh House in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — are also approaching completion after recent budget revisions. The Brunei project, initiated in March 2017, required Tk66.66 crore for completion during FY 2024–25, while the Riyadh project, revised to Tk45 crore, is scheduled to conclude by June 2025.
Other overseas construction projects, however, have faced delays. The Berlin chancery complex, launched in FY 2024–25 with Tk32.21 crore allocated, is still in its initial stages. Similarly, the Canberra chancery complex in Australia, estimated at Tk146.87 crore, has seen limited progress, with only Tk6.48 crore spent in FY 2023–24. Meanwhile, the Jeddah mission project — revised to Tk226.29 crore — recorded minimal spending of Tk3 crore by mid-2024, and Cairo’s chancery and residence project, approved in March 2024 at Tk165 crore, has a timeline extending to 2028.
Some projects have already been completed, including the Bangladesh chancery complex in Thimphu, Bhutan, which cost Tk72.26 crore.
Currently, Bangladesh operates 80 diplomatic and consular missions worldwide, including 59 embassies and high commissions, 20 consulates, and two permanent missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva. In addition, the country maintains permanent establishments in global hubs such as New Delhi, Kolkata, Ankara, New York, Washington DC, and Tokyo.
