Bangladesh PM Tarique named among TIME's 100 most influential people
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been named among the world’s 100 most influential people in 2026 by TIME magazine, marking a major moment of international recognition for the country’s newly elected leader.
The annual TIME100 list features prominent global figures, including US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah, reflecting Rahman’s growing global profile.
In its profile, TIME highlighted Rahman’s rapid political rise from years in exile to securing a landslide electoral victory earlier this year. His return followed the ousting of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, a turning point that reshaped the country’s political landscape. Rahman assumed office in February after his party’s decisive win, shortly after the death of his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
The magazine noted that Rahman faces significant challenges, including high inflation, youth unemployment and strained relations with regional powers.
Government officials welcomed the recognition, describing it as acknowledgment of Rahman’s role in restoring democratic processes and political freedoms. Prime Minister’s Office representatives said his leadership has focused on rebuilding institutions, strengthening governance and promoting inclusive economic growth.
Rahman has pledged to prioritise unity, democratic rights and long-term development, positioning his leadership as a new chapter in Bangladesh’s evolving political journey.
