India ready to induct next-generation missile system in the armed forces

India has moved closer to strengthening its air defence shield after successfully completing user evaluation trials of the next-generation Akash missile system, clearing a key hurdle for its induction into the armed forces.

The trials of the Akash New Generation (Akash-NG) system were conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and involved multiple interception scenarios designed to test operational readiness. According to the Defence Ministry, the missiles accurately intercepted aerial targets across a range of distances and altitudes, including low-altitude threats near the border and high-altitude targets at long range.
Officials said the trials validated the performance of the entire weapon system, including the Multi-Function Radar, command and control units, missile launch vehicles and other critical sub-systems. All major components have been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO laboratories in collaboration with Indian industry, reinforcing the government’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the “Make in India” initiative.
Senior scientists from DRDO and officials of the Indian Air Force witnessed the trials, which are seen as a major step toward operational deployment. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Air Force and industry partners, saying the advanced missile system would significantly enhance India’s ability to counter a wide spectrum of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, drones and cruise missiles.
DRDO Chairman said the successful completion of user trials has paved the way for induction of Akash-NG into service. Compared with earlier variants, Akash-NG offers improved reaction time, enhanced accuracy and greater mobility, making it a critical addition as India modernises its air defence architecture amid evolving regional security challenges.
