PM Tarique begins work to 'fulfil martyrs' vision of a democratic Bangladesh'

Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman began his official duties by pledging to fulfil what he described as the martyrs’ vision of building a democratic and sovereign Bangladesh.

On Wednesday morning, Bangladesh's prime minister visited the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, where he laid a wreath in honour of those who died in the 1971 Liberation War. He first paid tribute individually and later joined members of his newly formed cabinet in offering collective respects.
In the book, Tarique Rahman wrote: “After fascist rule and oppression, the people, through a free and fair election, have chosen democracy by direct vote. Alhamdulillah. I give thanks to Allah.”
Paying homage to the martyrs, he wrote: “As the newly elected prime minister, alongside the new cabinet, I humbly honour the Liberation War heroes of 1971 whose sacrifice gave us an independent Bangladesh.
“I also pay my respects to all who have laid down their lives in the struggle to protect the nation and democracy, from 1971 to 2024.”
He added that he and his government believe the martyrs had aspired to build a “safe, humane, democratic and sovereign” country, and that work has already begun to realise that goal.
He prayed for the ability to implement every programme announced before the people and sought forgiveness for all martyrs.
The visit came a day after President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to the new government at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The administration comprises 50 members, including 25 ministers and 24 state ministers, marking the formal start of the BNP-led government’s tenure.
