Trump vows tariffs on eight European nations over Greenland

US President Donald Trump has threatened to sharply escalate trade pressure on several European allies, vowing to impose sweeping new tariffs unless the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump said an additional 10 percent import tariff would be imposed from February 1 on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland and Great Britain. He added that the duties would rise to 25 percent from June 1 and remain in place until Washington secures a deal to acquire Greenland. All eight countries are already subject to earlier rounds of US tariffs.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory rich in minerals and strategically located in the Arctic, is vital to US national security. Danish and Greenlandic leaders have firmly rejected the proposal, insisting the island is not for sale and that its residents oppose joining the United States.
European governments reacted with concern, with officials from Norway, Sweden, France and Germany voicing strong support for Denmark and warning against linking trade measures to territorial disputes. Cyprus, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, said it had convened an emergency meeting of EU ambassadors to coordinate a response.
