Trump agrees to two-week ceasefire with Iran

US President Donald Trump has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, halting planned military strikes just hours before a deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said the decision followed discussions with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir, who have played a key role in mediation. The ceasefire is conditional on Iran ensuring the safe and immediate reopening of the vital shipping route, through which a significant share of global oil supplies passes.
Announcing the pause on his Truth Social platform, Trump described it as a “double-sided ceasefire” and said US military objectives had largely been achieved. He added that the temporary halt would provide space to finalise a broader agreement, noting that Washington has received a 10-point proposal from Tehran that could form the basis for negotiations.
Sharif confirmed that both sides had agreed to suspend hostilities across multiple theatres, inviting delegations from the US and Iran to Islamabad for further talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement. Expected participants include senior US officials such as Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Vice President JD Vance, though final arrangements remain unconfirmed.
The ceasefire follows weeks of intense conflict that began in late February, involving US and Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and other regional locations.
Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has expressed support for the temporary truce, though officials indicated it may not extend to all fronts.
Analysts say the agreement offers a critical window for diplomacy, but warn that deep mistrust and unresolved issues could still threaten a lasting peace.
