World Bank VP meets Yunus, praises interim govt's economic steps

Johannes Zutt, the recently appointed World Bank Vice President for South Asia, has lauded the economic initiatives undertaken by Bangladesh's interim government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

The commendation came during a late-night meeting yesterday at the State Guest House Jamuna, where Zutt, accompanied by Jean Pesme, the World Bank's new Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, met with Professor Yunus.
During their dialogue, Zutt conveyed his profound connection to Bangladesh, reminiscing about his prior role as the World Bank's country director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal from 2013 to 2015. This prior experience provides him with a unique insight into the country's development trajectory and challenges.
"Kudos to you and your fantastic team for doing a good job," Zutt stated, acknowledging the Interim Government's diligent efforts under Professor Yunus's stewardship, particularly in tackling "some very challenging issues in the financial sector." He further affirmed the World Bank's ongoing commitment, adding, "We are very much prepared to continue our journey and share the ambition of the people of Bangladesh." This statement signals continued collaboration and financial support for Bangladesh's developmental goals.
Professor Yunus, in turn, extended his gratitude for Zutt's support and appreciation. He then urged the World Bank to adopt a broader perspective of Bangladesh, emphasizing that its economy transcends mere "geographical boundaries." "If Bangladesh prospers, the whole South Asian region will prosper. If we separate ourselves, we are not progressing. We need to develop our international trade facilities and transport. We have an ocean. It is an important part of our economy," Yunus articulated, highlighting Bangladesh's strategic regional importance and its potential as a gateway for broader South Asian economic integration. This perspective underscores the interconnectedness of regional economies and the potential for Bangladesh to be a catalyst for growth beyond its borders.
Zutt also praised Professor Yunus's significant contributions to women's empowerment, a cornerstone of Bangladesh's development. "We will continue supporting you," Zutt affirmed, referencing the World Bank's past support for Bangladesh's groundbreaking girl's education stipend program, which has since been emulated in other countries. He further committed that "the World Bank will help Bangladesh create opportunities for the youth," indicating future investments in human capital development.
The World Bank Vice President concluded by noting the institution's substantial financial commitment to Bangladesh, revealing that it had financed over $3 billion in the last fiscal year alone. He pledged to maintain a similar level of support over the next three years, reinforcing the World Bank's sustained partnership with Bangladesh in its pursuit of economic stability and inclusive growth.
