Bangladesh's population reaches 175.7 million

Bangladesh's population has now reached an estimated 175.7 million people, with women making up half of that total.

This significant figure comes from the United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) flagship publication, the State of World Population 2025 report. The report, officially launched in Dhaka on Monday by Catherine Breen Kamkong, UNFPA Representative in Bangladesh, highlights a crucial opportunity for the nation.
A remarkable two-thirds of Bangladesh's population, roughly 115 million individuals, fall within the working-age group (15-64 years old). This substantial demographic, often referred to as a "demographic dividend," presents a prime window for economic growth and development if effectively harnessed. Kamkong emphasized, "It is an opportunity to harness the demographic dividend."
However, the report also signals an evolving demographic landscape. While the working-age population is booming, 7% of the population, approximately 12 million people, are aged 65 and above, indicating the early stages of population aging. This shift will necessitate adjustments in social services and healthcare planning in the coming years.
Furthermore, the report sheds light on Bangladesh's vibrant youth. Adolescents (aged 10-19) constitute 19% of the population, numbering around 33 million, while the broader youth cohort (aged 10-24) accounts for a substantial 28%, nearly 50 million individuals. This large youth demographic represents a powerful force for future innovation and productivity.
To truly capitalize on this demographic opportunity, significant investments in human capital are essential, particularly in healthcare. Kamkong pointed out that Bangladesh currently allocates only 0.7% of its GDP and 2% of its national budget to health. She urged for a substantial increase in this investment, stating, "We hope that will be increased to 5% of GDP and 15% of the common budget as the health and wellbeing of Bangladesh is crucial for harnessing the future potential of the country."
