Seven death penalty over 'war crimes' in Bangladesh

A local court in Bangladesh trial of 'war criminals' has issued the death penalty to seven individuals accused of participating in atrocities during the country's independence war in 1971.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1, comprising a three-member panel found the men from the Bagerhat district in southwestern Bangladesh guilty of crimes against humanity. These crimes included murder, rape, looting, kidnapping, and arson committed during the conflict that led to Bangladesh gaining independence from Pakistan.
During the announcement of the 293-page verdict, three of the defendants were present in court. Among the nine accused in this case, two passed away during the court proceedings, while the remaining four are currently at large.
The accused faced seven charges filed against them in May 2017 for their roles during the liberation war, a significant chapter in Bangladesh's history that involved a prolonged and violent struggle for independence from Pakistan.
Since its inception, the tribunal has delivered verdicts against more than 137 individuals across over 50 cases related to war crimes during the 1971 conflict.
