Nepali Army announces nationwide curfew from Wednesday

The Nepali Army has announced a strict nationwide curfew, saying it will go into effect from 5 p.m. Wednesday and remain in place until 6 a.m. Thursday. Officials say the move comes after days of violent unrest and growing threats to public safety.
In its statement, the Army revealed that what began as political protests have been increasingly hijacked by unruly groups. These groups, it said, have carried out arson attacks, looted businesses, destroyed public and private property, and even targeted individuals. Alarming reports of attempted sexual assaults also surfaced, prompting security forces to warn that the violence could escalate further if left unchecked.
“The curfew is necessary to restore calm and prevent more loss of life,” the Army said, while extending condolences to families affected by the turmoil. At least dozens of deaths and significant property damage have already been reported across different regions in recent days.
Authorities stressed that essential services will not be disrupted during the curfew. Ambulances, fire engines, hearses, and vehicles transporting health workers or security personnel will be allowed to operate, but service providers have been instructed to coordinate with local security officers for safe movement.
The Army also confirmed that political discussions are ongoing in an attempt to defuse the crisis, but it issued a stern warning: any demonstration that turns into looting, arson, or violence will be treated strictly as a criminal act and dealt with force.
The statement carried a broader appeal to the public as well. Retired soldiers, journalists, civil servants, and ordinary citizens were urged not to spread or believe rumors, but to rely solely on official information to avoid panic and misinformation.
“The Nepali Army remains committed to ensuring the security and humanitarian rescue of all Nepalis under any circumstances,” the announcement concluded, underlining the military’s role not just as an enforcer, but also as a protector during emergencies.
