Dhaka-Delhi seek fresh momentum in relations

Bangladesh and India have held wide-ranging discussions aimed at resetting bilateral relations, signalling a renewed push for cooperation following the formation of Dhaka’s new government. The talks took place between Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi.

The meeting marked the first high-level political engagement since Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assumed office, after a period of strained ties between the two neighbours. Both sides discussed ways to revitalise cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy security and regional stability, while also exchanging views on broader global developments.
Jaishankar described the talks as constructive and emphasised the importance of maintaining regular communication. The Bangladeshi delegation included Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah, reflecting the significance Dhaka attaches to the visit.
Officials said Bangladesh is seeking a “balanced and respectful” relationship based on mutual benefit, with particular focus on reducing trade barriers, improving border management and ensuring equitable water-sharing arrangements. Energy cooperation, including fuel supply and cross-border electricity trade, also featured prominently in the discussions.
During his visit, Rahman held separate meetings with Indian ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Piyush Goyal to explore collaboration in energy and commerce sectors. Analysts say these engagements could help address longstanding trade imbalances and unlock new investment opportunities.
India’s foreign ministry highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries, expressing optimism that the visit would strengthen partnership at a time of shifting regional dynamics.
