Death toll in India's Chhattisgarh train accident rises to 11

The death toll from a train accident in India’s central state of Chhattisgarh has risen to 11, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

A passenger train collided with a stationary freight train in Bilaspur district late Tuesday, prompting a major rescue operation by emergency services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). According to Indian Railways, at least 20 passengers were injured in the crash and have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several are reported to be in critical condition.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced compensation for the deceased and the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sorrow over the incident and said rescue efforts were underway with full government support.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. Preliminary findings suggest a possible signal failure or human error, though officials said the exact reason will be confirmed after the probe.
Railway services on the affected route remain partially suspended as teams work to clear debris and restore operations.
The accident comes amid renewed concerns about railway safety in India, which has seen a series of deadly accidents in recent years despite ongoing modernization efforts.
