India-Bangladesh ties vital for shared future: Envoy

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma on Sunday said strong India-Bangladesh relations are essential for ensuring sustainable growth and long-term regional stability, stressing that both neighbours can serve as engines for each other’s economic progress.

Speaking at a reception in Dhaka marking India’s Republic Day, Verma said the two countries, as rapidly expanding economies, are uniquely placed to deepen cooperation and strengthen regional integration. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan attended the event as chief guest.
Describing Bangladesh as a “trusted partner and co-traveller”, Verma said New Delhi and Dhaka are pursuing forward-looking and future-ready collaboration grounded in mutual trust, innovation and shared benefit. He noted that bilateral ties are shaped not only by strategic interests but also by historical bonds forged during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.
The high commissioner highlighted deep cultural connections between the two nations, referencing literary icons Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam and shared traditions in music, art, cinema and theatre that continue to link their societies.
Verma pointed to growing connectivity and economic cooperation as pillars of the partnership, citing cross-border energy projects such as the India-Bangladesh diesel pipeline and power transmission lines supplying electricity from India and Nepal through the Indian grid. He said these initiatives have boosted industrial growth, particularly in Bangladesh’s readymade garments and pharmaceutical sectors.
Looking ahead, he said both countries could jointly develop regional value chains, digital platforms and energy corridors while cooperating on climate resilience and environmental sustainability. Verma reaffirmed India’s support for a democratic, peaceful and inclusive Bangladesh, wishing its people continued prosperity and stability.
